Privacy Policy

This Privacy Policy explains how the Book app for iPhone and iPad ("Book", "the app", "we", "us") handles your information. In short: Book has no accounts, no ads and no tracking. Your books and reading data stay on your device. We collect limited, pseudonymous usage analytics to understand how the app is used and to improve it.

Data stored on your device

Everything you create or import in Book is stored locally on your device, inside the app's own storage:

• books and documents you import (EPUB, PDF, FB2 and other supported files), including files shared to Book from other apps;
• your library, shelves, covers, reading progress, bookmarks, highlights and notes;
• reading statistics, goals, streaks and achievements;
• app settings and preferences.

We do not upload this data to our servers and we cannot see it. The home screen widgets, the share extension, Siri shortcuts and Spotlight search read this data on your device only. Deleting the app deletes this data. If you use device backups (iCloud Backup or a computer backup), Apple may include the app's data in those backups under Apple's own privacy policy.

Usage analytics (Amplitude)

To understand which features are used and where people get stuck, Book sends usage events to Amplitude, Inc., our analytics provider. This includes:

• a random app user ID and a random device ID (not your name, email or advertising identifier);
• events such as onboarding steps, opening the paywall, starting a purchase, importing a book, finishing a reading session or reaching a daily goal, with details like the file format, reading time in minutes and the number of books in your library;
• your answers in onboarding (reading goals, daily goal, how many books you read last year);
• whether you have a Book widget on your Home Screen, whether reminders are on, your app language;
• device model, OS version, app version and country/region, which is derived from your IP address (we turned off city-level location).

We never send book titles, authors, file contents, highlights or notes to Amplitude. This data is linked to the random IDs above, is used only for analytics and improving Book, and is not used for advertising or tracking. Amplitude's privacy policy: https://amplitude.com/privacy

Data we do not collect

Book does not collect your name, email address, phone number, precise location, contacts or advertising identifier (IDFA). We do not use advertising SDKs, do not track you across other companies' apps or websites, and do not sell personal data.

Third-party services

a) Book details and covers (Open Library and Google Books). When you search for a book or scan an ISBN, the app sends the search text or ISBN to Open Library (openlibrary.org), a service of the Internet Archive. When you import a book without a cover, the app sends its title and author to Google Books (googleapis.com) to find a cover image. Only the title, author, search text or ISBN is sent; no information about you is included. Privacy policies: https://archive.org/about/terms.php and https://policies.google.com/privacy

b) Purchases (Apple and RevenueCat). Payments for Book Pro are processed by Apple through the App Store; we never receive your payment details. To check your subscription status and restore purchases, the app uses RevenueCat, Inc. RevenueCat receives a random anonymous app user ID, your purchase and subscription history for this app, the app version, device model, OS version, country/region and IP address. We also share with RevenueCat a few app settings (onboarding answers, daily goal, number of books, main book format, widget use) and the random Amplitude IDs, so that we can show relevant offers and see subscription events in our analytics. If you installed Book from an Apple Search Ads campaign, Apple's AdServices framework provides RevenueCat with the campaign and keyword that led to the install; this does not use your advertising identifier. c) Apple system features. Translation, Live Text / text recognition, Siri, notifications and review prompts are provided by Apple's system frameworks and are governed by Apple's privacy policy: https://www.apple.com/legal/privacy/

Camera, photos and notifications

The app asks for camera or photo access only when you choose to scan a barcode, recognize text or pick a cover image. Images are processed on your device and are not sent to us. Reading reminders and streak notifications are scheduled locally on your device. You can change these permissions at any time in iOS Settings.

Children

Book is not directed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from children.

Your rights

Your books and reading data are never on our servers; delete the app to delete them. Analytics and purchase data are stored by Amplitude and RevenueCat under random IDs. To access or delete this data, contact us and tell us that you use Book; we will ask our providers to find and delete it. Analytics data is kept for as long as it is needed for analytics, and no longer than 2 years. If you are in the EEA, the UK or another region with data protection laws, you also have the right to complain to your local supervisory authority.

Changes to this policy

We may update this policy from time to time. The new version will be published on this page with an updated date.
